(No, not while I still have 200k+ mile cars)

Subaru's belt is burning up, my M3's high-pitch whine is back. I can't afford to fix both. Bah!

Sorry about all the complaining lately.

Where is the whine coming from? Pulley? Gear? Wheel Bearing?

If I knew, I would have already beat that part to death with a sledgehammer. Initially, since it appeared just after I installed my alternator, I thought it was a bad alternator bearing. It sounds just like what the internet says a bad alternator bearing sounds like. But it's hard, because it normally appears when I'm already driving (many times from a cold start but sometimes at full operating temp) and so I can't pull over, pop the hood and rev the car while listening to all the components.

Just pop the belt off and spin the alternator by hand, if it's bad, you'll hear it.

Yeah, but it doesn't do it all the time... Also what should I know about pulling the belt off, I think I only managed it the first time by luck.

I know, I know... Google it...

Good, I didn't have to google that article. I should probably do this tonight, instead of driving 80 miles tomorrow without knowing what it is.

"Should"

i was going to guess the stress of owning several high milage cars...that could account for the whining

Get a mechanic's stethoscope. While the car is running place it up against the stationary nut on the front of the alt. Compare the sound to one of the other idler pulley bearing on the engine. Usually a bad bearing will have a distinct "scraping" sound to it.

Yeah, I have thought about getting one of those. Not sure I could get in there while the car is running, though...

Harbor freight has them for like 2 bucks, so if you use it once it is worth it.

Yeah, I'll check it out. I was already heading there today to get a belt tensioner wrench thingy.
